Together with our humane community, we will lobby our legislators in support of humane legislation and send a strong pro-animal message to New Mexico’s lawmakers.
On Animal Protection Lobby Day, advocates from across the state will visit their lawmaker’s offices and deliver letters encouraging them to support several important bills, including bills that will:
Criminalize Animal Sexual Abuse
New Mexico is one of only two states where animal sexual abuse is not a crime. Animal sexual abuse, also known as “bestiality” is not only cruel to animals. It is often connected to child sexual abuse, child pornography, human sex trafficking, and other violent and exploitative crimes. Evidence that sexual abuse of animals occurs is readily available, and experts report it happens more frequently than the public is aware. This bill will establish one of the strongest anti-bestiality laws in the country.
Send Homeless Horses to Equine Rescues, Not Auctions and Slaughterhouses
The outcome of work with state agencies and equine rescue professionals, this legislation aims to ensure that homeless equines in the custody of the state are less vulnerable to kill-buyers from the horse slaughter industry. This bill would give NM’s state-registered equine shelters first right of refusal, before auction, to take in homeless horses and other equines to be rehabilitated and adopted into loving homes.
