Three months ago, Animal Protection Voters and Española Humane united to file a motion to intervene in a lawsuit brought by the pet industry challenging Senate Bill 57, a crucial affordable spay/neuter law passed in 2020.
We are thrilled to announce that Honorable Judge Matthew Wilson granted our motion to intervene at a hearing on July 16.
Following 30 minutes of oral arguments, Judge Wilson swiftly ruled that APV and Española Humane have legal standing and the right to intervene in Pet Food Institute et al. v. Michelle Lujan Grisham et al. The judge emphasized the case’s significant public importance, allowing us to actively participate in defending Senate Bill 57 throughout the litigation process.
This milestone empowers us to bolster the state’s defense and present our own compelling legal arguments in support of maintaining Senate Bill 57. This important law, on the books now for four years, is poised to allocate vital spay/neuter funds to New Mexico communities urgently in need.
Successfully clearing this legal hurdle marks an essential first step in safeguarding New Mexico’s affordable spay/neuter law. The lawsuit’s outcome will resonate beyond our state, impacting similar legislation nationwide.
