APV Endorses Matthew McQueen
Animal Protection Voters, New Mexico’s leading political and legislative advocacy organization for animal protection, is honored to endorse Matthew McQueen for New Mexico Land Commissioner in the 2026 general election.
What does the NM Land Commissioner do?
The New Mexico State Land Office plays an important role in protecting and managing 9 million surface and 13 million mineral acres across every county. These lands raise critical funding for public schools, hospitals, colleges, and other public institutions. These entities benefit from revenue raised by the Land Office on state trust land.
The New Mexico Commissioner of Public Lands oversees how these lands are used by ensuring the responsible development, conservation, and stewardship of state trust land. Decisions made by the Commissioner of Public Lands directly affect the ecosystems shared by wildlife, domestic animals, and humans.
Matthew McQueen has been a proven champion for animals throughout his time as a New Mexico State Representative. As Land Commissioner, McQueen sees opportunities for increasing protections for animals on state trust land by creating more wildlife crossings, increasing protections for free-roaming horses and transitioning state-owned land towards renewable energy to prevent further environmental damage.
With his unparalleled record of passing animal protection laws during five terms served in the State House of Representatives, Representative McQueen resoundingly earned APV’s endorsement as the most qualified candidate for this critical statewide elected position.
