Last month, APV published our endorsements and sent out our 2024 General Election Voter Guide so you would know which candidates for the New Mexico State Legislature and the New Mexico seats in the U.S. Congress are champions for animals. The General Election results are now in, and we are thrilled to announce:
95% of the 75 candidates we endorsed won their races!
Nationally, we recognize that this year’s election cycle was stressful and contentious, with much at stake, and it’s not yet clear exactly what new barriers and/or opportunities the animal protection movement will face as a result of the elections. But we know that together we will persevere. The animals are counting on us.
Rest assured we will continue our powerful organizing of broad-based coalitions, and we will never forget that animal protection issues have served, and will continue to serve, as a unifier among the populace, both locally in New Mexico and nationally. Our urgent work relies on your continued support, your active involvement in your democracy, and your relentless determination to make things better for vulnerable animals and those who care about them. This is the core of our mission and vision.
Locally, we celebrate that our State Legislature remains dominated by policymakers who understand and embrace humane values. This is not accidental, and in fact it is because of our greater community’s collective efforts to elect lawmakers who embrace compassion and empathy. All of us must continue to extend our gratitude to these policymakers for their important service to the things that matter for humane communities across our state.
At the national level, we will not stop looking for opportunities to advance our work, and our collaborations with allied organizations will continue with necessary vigor.
In the wake of so much work for the common good, here are the APV-backed candidates who won their races and will begin their (first or new) terms in January 2025:
