SANTA FE, N.M. – Animal Protection Voters (APV), via its political action committee APV-PAC, announced today its endorsement of Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham for the next governor of New Mexico.
In the face of a presidency and Congress that are undermining and reversing progress for national animal protections, it is vital that the state’s next governor stand ready to protect animals at the state level and uphold the humane values of New Mexican voters. As the leading legislative and political advocacy organization for animal protection in New Mexico, APV enthusiastically supports Lujan Grisham as the best choice for voters who want to protect New Mexico’s animals.
“As an animal lover and proud dog and cat owner, I’m honored to have the endorsement of the Animal Protection Voters,” said Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham. “In Congress I support laws to stop animal cruelty and have been a leader to end horse slaughter. As governor, I’ll advocate for laws that help ensure the ethical treatment of our animals. Whether it’s providing protective vests to police dogs or critical funding for spaying and neutering pets, Animal Protection Voters serves an important role in New Mexico.”
“New Mexico’s next governor will play a monumentally important role in the lives and wellbeing of animals in our homes, in our communities, and in the wild,” said Elisabeth Jennings, Executive Director of APV. “Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham has not only shown consistent support for pro-animal policies, but also played a crucial leadership role on significant animal protection legislation, making her the clear standout candidate in the 2018 gubernatorial race. Voters can find in her a strong, competent and compassionate voice for New Mexicans’ humane values.”
Congresswoman Lujan Grisham’s history of animal advocacy is well demonstrated during her years serving in the U.S. House of Representatives. Notably, she has taken a strong stand against the slaughter of American horses for human consumption—by leading an amendment to the FY18 Agriculture Appropriations bill to prohibit funds being used in the bill to slaughter wild horses and burros, and by cosponsoring the Safeguard American Food Exports Act to prohibit equine slaughter and transport to slaughter.
Additionally, Lujan Grisham has fought to stop the Chinese dog meat trade, ban cruel horse “soring,” criminalize the creation of animal “crush videos,” crack down on unfettered use of toxic pesticides that threaten native bees and birds, foster life-saving partnerships between veterans and service animals, and protect domestic violence victims and their companion animals.
Animal Protection Voters/APV-PAC issues endorsements based on candidates’ records and positions on animal protection issues and not based on party affiliation.
