National equine advocates have been working to pass the Save America’s Forgotten Equines Act (SAFE Act) that would make it illegal to both slaughter equines in the United States and to export them for slaughter to other countries.
The best hope for passage of the SAFE Act right now is to include it in the Farm Bill. The Senate Agriculture Committee has not yet introduced its Farm Bill draft and our very own New Mexico Senator Ben Ray Luján is on this committee. It is the perfect time to call him and politely ask him to include the SAFE Act in the Farm Bill!
You can do this by:
Calling Senator Ben Ray Luján’s office between 9am and 5pm Eastern Time at (202) 224-6621. You will be connected to a staff member or voicemail. Tell them:
“Hello, my name is ____, and I’m a constituent living in [your town/city]. I care deeply about ending the slaughter of American horses, and I’m calling to urge the Senator to include the Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act, H.R. 3475 / S. 2037, in the Farm Bill. Thank you.”
Please take just a few minutes to speak up for equines. Thank you!
