Also, the Equine Protection Fund is in the news
America’s horses are whinnying with delight for Senator Tom Udall of New Mexico! Earlier this month, during debate on the fiscal year 2016 Agricultural Appropriations bill, in the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee, Sen. Udall presented an amendment to prohibit all federal funding for USDA inspections of horse slaughterhouses in the United States. Without inspections, U.S. horse slaughter plants cannot legally operate, keeping the predatory industry out off U.S. soil.
Thankfully, the amendment passed by a voice vote in committee and is now featured in the bill headed to the Senate floor for a final vote. If the amendment language is included in the final Agriculture Appropriations bill passed by Congress, a vital barrier to the reinstitution of the appalling practice of American equine slaughter will continue throughout fiscal year 2016 (which begins October 1, 2015).
Please take time RIGHT NOW to thank Senator Udall (email & phone | Facebook) for this huge achievement in preventing the return of cruel, polluting slaughterhouses to New Mexico and the U.S. This is the Senator’s latest powerful action to help animals, but remember that giving a nice “thank you” is always an impactful way to show your support of leaders who care about horses and all of us!
Equine Protection Fund In The News
In early July, KOAT News featured one of our favorite Equine Protection Fund assistance stories. In the video below, see how the Fund assisted Acheron, a young colt whose unexpected (but not unwelcome) birth by a mare rescued from Walkin’ N Circles Ranch put a local therapeutic riding program in temporary financial need.
Additionally, Animal Protection of New Mexico’s Equine Campaign Manager recently joined KRSY radio’s “The Lowdown” for a far-ranging discussion of how horses have positively affected New Mexican life and society through the centuries. Listen to the hour-long interview at our website.
