FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 8, 2018
SANTA FE, N.M. – As the leading political voice for voters who care about animals, Animal Protection Voters (APV), via its political action committee APV-PAC, announced today its endorsement of Senator Howie Morales for the next Lieutenant Governor of New Mexico.
“Pets and animals play such a huge role in the lives of so many of us in New Mexico. I am honored that Animal Protection Voters has given me its support to be the next Lieutenant Governor of our state. I will always push to ensure animals receive humane care and protection from cruelty and exploitation, and that we give real value to the connection between compassion for animals and the wellbeing of families and communities,” said Senator Howie Morales.
“Senator Howie Morales has an impeccable record of supporting and demonstrating leadership on important animal protection issues, making him the standout candidate in the 2018 Lieutenant Governor’s race,” said Jessica Johnson, chief legislative officer for APV. “With his background and history, he is uniquely positioned and committed to supporting pro-animal policies, which are inextricably linked to Senator Morales’ priorities to advocate for education, the environment, public safety, behavioral health, and child protection.”
Senator Morales’ history of animal advocacy is well demonstrated during his years serving in the New Mexico Senate. During his tenure in the Senate, he has earned a perfect 100% lifetime score in APV’s annual Scorecard. Notably, he has sponsored past legislation prohibiting the use of drones for hunting, securing protective vests for police dogs, identifying Department of Transportation projects to help reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions, and increasing penalties for trophy poaching. Most recently in the 2018 state legislative session, Senator Morales played a key role in securing the passage of a bill that would have provided, for the first time ever in New Mexico, a robust funding source for spay/neuter services for low-income families.
To continue this legacy of animal advocacy, Senator Morales also plans to work as Lieutenant Governor to ensure law enforcement agencies have sufficient trained personnel and resources to enforce state animal cruelty laws, and he will continue to fight the U.S. Air Force’s plan to massively expand F-16 training missions over the Aldo Leopold and Gila Wilderness, which will disastrously disrupt wildlife in these pristine wild areas.
Animal Protection Voters/APV-PAC issues endorsements based on candidates’ records and positions on animal protection issues and not based on party affiliation.
