FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Santa Fe, N.M. – Animal Protection Voters—New Mexico’s leading political and legislative advocacy organization for animal protection—has announced its endorsement of Melanie Stansbury for the Congressional District 1 seat formerly held by Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland.
Representative Stansbury was endorsed by APV based on her outstanding record and her actions for the people and animals of New Mexico. Representative Stansbury has shown consistent support for a variety of animal protection measures impacting companion animals, equines, and wildlife—she received a perfect score from APV in her first legislative session and has maintained steady support for pro-animal measures during her tenure.
Representative Stansbury is a water resources professional with a focus on issues that affect the animals of New Mexico, especially climate change, sustainability, and environmental justice. With her previous experience working as staff for the U.S. Senate and the Office of President Obama, Representative Stansbury has a notable level of understanding of local and national issues affecting New Mexico’s communities, coupled with deep compassion for vulnerable populations, including animals. She has committed to working in Congress to prioritize transferring the surviving chimpanzees—currently still held in a laboratory environment on Holloman Air Force Base—to a more humane and cost-effective sanctuary.
Animal Protection Voters issues endorsements based on candidates’ records and positions on animal protection issues and not based on party affiliation.
